Reading pips

The dots on a token equal the number of ways to roll it out of 36. A settlement touching a 6, 9 and 4 collects on 5+4+3 = 12 of every 36 rolls, a third of the game. Strong openings usually total 10-13 pips with at least two different resources.

The 7

Seven is the most common roll (16.7%), which is why holding more than 7 cards is risky: the robber hits roughly once every six turns.
